Nome Public Schools
Extensions Homeschool Program
Our
Mission
The Extensions Program seeks to
extend quality education's influence into the community. This program
serves Nome families dedicated to academic excellence who make a
long-term commitment to teach their children in a home environment.
Extensions will provide families with a wide variety of educational
opportunities and curricular options to best facilitate and support
students' total education plan.

WHO
Extensions serves 7th through 12th grade students living in Nome
(or it's Banner Creek, Icy view, Dexter, Beam Road, and Snake River
subdivisions).
HOW
Parents are the teachers. Parents choose the students' curriculum
and align it with Alaska State standards with the aide of an academic
advisor and the approval of a state certified staff member. After an
individualized lesson plan is developed, parents have monthly contact
with the academic advisor. The parent must submit quarterly paperwork
to the advisor to evaluate student progress.
WHEN
Spring Enrollment is open May 8-19th, 2006, and Fall enrollment is open August 14th to September 8th, 2006. Forms are available at Nome-Beltz High School.
Individualized lesson plans are due September 15th. Maximum enrollment
is twenty students or six families, whichever happens first.
WHAT
*Extensions students
must comply with NPS policy regarding annual required achievement
testing.
*As full time Nome Public Schools students, Extensions students may
participate in district sponsored sports and other extra-curricular
activities. Other fees and expectations are the same as those required
of all students.
*Extensions parents are strongly encouraged to become involved in the
greater educational community. (PTSA, district
planning, sports and activities boosters, teacher in-services, etc.)
*Extensions offers a $2500 allotment to each full time correspondence
student per school year, to be used for curricula, supplies, internet
access, and technology.
*Parents involved in Extensions are strongly encouraged to participate
in the Homeschool Association, which meets on a regular basis to
discuss program improvements and keep informed of NPS policy and
procedures.
