LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS - The Nome community is very supportive of its graduates! The attachment below includes the Local Scholarship Packet information as well as a list of 20 scholarships that students have historically been able to apply for with this scholarship packet. Check back in the spring for scholarship opportunity updates, but the packet is expected to remain in this format for the 2012 scholarship year. Seniors have already been introduced to the main elements of the packet and will be working on it this fall.

Forrest Jones Memorial Scholarship
•Deadline – November 15, 2011
•$3000
•Applicant must be enrolled in or applying to one of the following (in an aviation field) or a high school senior applying to:
oAccredited college or university
oLicensed flight school
oCertified A&P program
Gates Millennium Scholars
•Eligible students:
oAre African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American
oCumulative high school GPA of 3.3
oWill enroll for the first time at a US located, accredited college or university in the fall of 2011 as a full-time, degree-seeking, first-year student

Fairbanks Alaska Area Plumbers and Pipefitters Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee
ACLU Youth Activist Scholar
•Deadline – November 22, 2011
•Up to $2000
•To qualify you must:
oHave demonstrated a strong commitment to civil liberties through some form of activism;
oBe a high school senior planning on entering an accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking student in the 2012/2013 academic year;
oHave attained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the time of graduation and;
oNot be a current ACLU plaintiff or witness in a legal case.
American Civil Liberties Union of Alaska Foundation 2012 Joan Hamilton Memorial Scholarship
•Deadline: November 22, 2011
•Up to $2500/academic year – renewal awards available upon application
•Eligibility:
o2012-13 academic year attendee in a post-high school educational or vocational program
ostudying for a career related to law (i.e. lawyer, paralegal, VSO, guardian ad litem, etc)
oAlaska student committed to improving the lives of rural or Alaska Native communities
Horatio Alger Scholarship
•Deadline: October 30, 2011
•$2,500 to $20,000
•Eligibility:
oPlan to enter a college in the US no later than the fall following graduation
oStrong commitment to pursuing and completing a bachelor’s degree at an accredited institution (may start at a 2-year institution and then transfer to a 4-year institution)
oCritical financial need, preferably $50,000 or lower adjusted gross income per family
oInvolvement in extra-curricular and community service activities
oMinimum GPA of 2.0
oUS CitizenshiP
All-in-One Applications Scholarship Competition
•Deadline: Jan. 15, 2012
•Two $1,000 merit scholarships
•Criteria for selection include: GPA, high school resume, and All-in-One Applications personal essay
