Lab Safety Rules

General Lab Safety Rules

1) Read all lab directions several times and follow the directions exactly.
2) NEVER perform activities that are not outlined in the directions or given by Mr. Hindman
3) Never handle equipment unless you are instructed to.
4) Take extreme care not to spill or break any thing. If you do, contact Mr. Hindman immediately and follow the directions for cleaning up.
5) Never eat, chew gum, place object in your mouth, or drink in the laboratory.
6) Wash you hands when directed to do so.

Using Glassware Safely

1) Never pick up any glassware unless you are sure it is not hot. Remember, HOT and COLD glass LOOKS the SAME!
2) Never heat glassware that is not thoroughly dry.
3) Never heat glassware that has a crack in it.
4) Dispose of broken glass by wrapping it up in paper towels and then place carefully in the trash can.

Dress Code

1) Wear safety glasses when heating up objects, working with chemicals or other substances that might get into your eyes.
2) Wear a lab apron when working with chemicals or heating up substances.
3) Tie long hair back to keep it away from fire, chemicals, or burners.
4) Remove any jewelry that may hang down and touch chemicals and flames.
5) Roll up long sleeves to keep out of a flame.

Fire Safety

1) Never heat anything, particularly chemicals, unless instructed to do so.
2) Never heat anything in a closed container.
3) Never reach across a flame.
4) Always maintain a clean work area, especially when using a flame.

Chemical Safety

1) Never smell any chemical directly from its container. Always use your hand to waft some of the odors from the top of the container toward your nose and only when told to do so.
2) Never mix chemical unless instructed to do so.
3) Keep all lids closed when chemicals are not in use.
4) Dispose of all chemicals as instructed by Mr. Hindman
5) Immediately rinse with water any chemicals, particularly acids, that get on your skin and clothes. Then notify Mr. Hindman.

Eye and Face Safety

1) When heating a test tube or bottle, always point the open end away from you and others.

Sharp Instrument Safety

1) Never cut any material toward you, always cut away from you.
2) Immediately notify Mr. Hindman if you cut yourself.

Electrical Safety

1) Never touch an electrical appliance or outlet with wet hands.
2) Avoid using extension cords to plug in appliances. If you do, take care to limit the possibility of someone tripping over it.
