ALISON Ice Thickness

Each week, the students use a fixed ice thickness gauge. Students hook up a small 12 volt battery to a wire line. This melts the wire enough to allow it to be raised up through the ice. A weight on the end of the wire will hit the bottom of the ice. Since we know the total length of the wire, students simply measure the amount of wire pulled up and subtract it from the total length to get the ice thickness. The weight is then lowered back down and the wire refreezes in the ice.
