Students at ACSA are field testing curriculum developed by TERC. The unit of study include the circulatory and respiratory system, the effects of smoking and second-hand smoke, the benefits of aerobic exercise, and the scientific method. We have utilized the National Geographic's Kids Network website by gathering information and sharing data with schools from around the nation.

Students prepare their testing solutions.

Students prepare their testing solutions

Students are testing for the presence of carbon dioxide in the air we exhale.

Students observed that the solution
they breathed into changed colors.

The color changed occured when an acid was produced
because of the reaction of the solution to carbon dioxide

Students compare their control beaker to the tested solution.

The effect of carbon dioxide on bromothymol blue,
a pH indicator.

After collecting their data,
students record their results.

Will the solution change back to its original
color if fresh oxygen is pumped through it?
Yes, it will!
