Guest Speaker Assists Anvil City Science Academy

By: Douglas & Brad

Mrs. Kathy Graham a staff reporter from the Nome Nugget volunteered to speak to the Science Academy students on how to write news articles.

Anvil City Science Academy teacher, Todd Hindman, asked Kathy Graham to come to the classroom and give the students an idea on how to write a newspaper article. Mrs. Graham asked the students to write an article on what happened at home or in the community. Some of the students at the Science Academy wrote articles on basketball, fashion, & the Iditarod.

After reporter Kathy Graham had talked to the students on how to write an article, the students wrote their stories. Then, each student read out loud the articles they wrote for their news story. This gave them a taste of journalism.

Pizza Topped With Peace, Love, & Happiness

By Brad

Four lucky kids had a pizza party for having good behavior. At Anvil City Science Academy, teacher Todd Hindman told his class that there would be a reward for good behavior in the class. Mr. Hindman made a "Peace, Love, and Happiness" jar. If Mr. Hindman sees a student doing something nice for someone else, or the class, the student will get their name placed in the jar.

Every week Mr. Hindman picks one name from the jar. After four weeks, the four students get to make and eat their own pizza. This past month, the lucky students were David, Jacob, Mina and Brad .

Mr. Hindman`s Clothes are Interesting

By Scott Larsen & Andy

Mr.Hindman has the most interesting style of clothing we have ever seen.

We have seen him wear purple tennis shoes, cartoon ties, two earrings, corduroys, and blue jeans. He also wears beady glasses, and a watch on his belt loop. And last but not least he has a chain on his leather wallet.

That is only some of his everyday clothes. So now you know you know what we mean by interesting clothes.

 Teacher All Tied-Up!

By: Reba & Jessa

Mr. Todd Hindman, of the Anvil City Science Academy, has a very colorful and interesting collection of ties. The rest of his wardrobe is jeans, button down shirts, or vests. Students in our class say that Mr. Hindman's ties are "crazy", "unique", "creative", "weird", and "tacky".

Mr. Hindman receives his ties as gifts, or he buys them himself.
Mr. Hindman's favorite tie is one with an alien on it. Mr. Hindman wears these ties because while he was working in Dallas, he was required to wear one. He wore these "special" ones because he didn't want to be boring.

Kicks at School

By Jessa

The Anvil City Science Academy has a unique way of teaching physical education, they offer Tae Kwon Do as a class. Mr. Hank Irelan is the teacher for Tae Kwon Do.

Teaching Tae Kwon Do is a way of teaching physical education and self defense at the same time. It is not dangerous, it is used for self defense only. Students will learn the basic steps, nothing dangerous. Most of the kids like knowing how to protect themselves.

 Tae Kwon Do Changes

By Dustin

There was a big change at ACSA this past week, as uniforms were passed out during Tae Kwon Do. Tae Kwon Do now starts at the beginning of the day. The teacher believes that the respect used in Tae Kwon Do will carry over throughout the day. No signs of changing the schedule have been seen.

The NBA Passes on Excitement

By: Michael

Basketball is the most exciting and fun sport because of all of the shooting, running, dribbling, and passing that go on continuously throughout the game.

Teams earn points by shooting the basketball through the basket. Two points can be earned by making a basket in the zone. Three points can be earned by making a basket at the three-point line or behind the line. Sometimes points can be earned if you get fouled and go to the free throw line.

The fast pace of the game is set from the running, dribbling, and passing. In short bursts, players run back and forth as points are made or missed. In between, players are dribbling and passing the basketball to find an open man to make a basket.

Any game between the Chicago Bulls and the Utah Jazz will be fun to watch as well as exciting.

Students Celebrate Dr. Seuss's Birthday
By Participating in Read Across America

By Jessa & Emily

Thursday, March 2nd was the famous Dr. Seuss's birthday. Last week, the students of Anvil City Science Academy celebrated and the teachers joined in on the fun too!

Each day of the week, a student read to the class a Dr. Seuss Book. After the student finished reading, all of the students joined in on an activity related to the book.

For the story, "The Lorax", students drew a Lorax and made Truffula trees out of colorful paper. After reading "The Cat in the Hat", students made red and white paper hats. "The Butter Battle Book" led to a paper fight. Each piece of paper had a question on it. If your team had the piece of paper on its side after the battle, you had to answer the question in order to throw it away. The team with the most paper in the end lost the battl

Dr. Suess's stories all have a moral lesson. These lessons teach the children that read them good things to do with their lives.

Most of the kids liked the way Anvil City Science Academy celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday, so let the birthday celebration continue!

Explodes in SimCity

By Dustin

Thursday afternoon, in a computer game there was a big explosion followed by a big booming sound. The power plant exploded, leaving damage to near by power lines.

As a result of the explosion, two fires were spreading throughout the city. The fire department had to be called, so that no further damage would occur.

In order for the city to have power, the mayor had to buy a new power supply. This resulted in the taxes being raised. Citizens of the city were not pleased with this change. Details of the cause have not been given as of this time. It is believed that the power plant was too old. Luckily, SimCity is only a game.

The Death of Max

By Abby and Emily

The Horton's dog Max had been missing for a week. All of the Kremer's and Horton`s were very worried. They tried to remember how Max looked the last time they had seen him.

Abby and Jessica H. were building a snow fort in the Kremer's backyard. The two girls went exploring for tools to use, when they found Max.

Jessica screamed in horror when she saw the corpse of her darling puppy. Her father, Wayne, and Abby's father, Fred, used axes and ice picks to get Max's frozen body free from the ice.

Apparently a pipe had broken under the Kremer's house. When the dog ventured under the house it laid down in the water, because the water was warm and he was cold. Before he knew it, he was frozen to the ice.

There was mourning and sorrow at the Kremer's and Horton's after Max was found. The Horton's have decided to bury Max at their beach-side camp in the spring next to Chelsea, their other dead dog.

About three weeks after Max's death Kathy Horton went on a trip to Anchorage for a doctors appointment. She came home the following week with a little surprise for the family. It was a little black and white Lhasa Apso, the same breed of dog as Max. The Horton's decided to name the fury little fellow Sammy.

The Horton's and the Kremer's love the little newcomer. The sorrow over Max`s death was gone, but they still held his memory close.
