Molas
A Mola is an art form traditionally made by the Kuna Indians of Panama. Using fabric and thread (and a "reverse applique" technique) the Kuna women make colorful shirts for their loved ones and to sell for much needed income. A mola panel is made of 2 to 7 layers of fabric. The design is sketched onto the top layer, and fabric is snipped away to reveal the lower layers of fabric/color. We used paper instead of fabric, but used the same method of cutting through layers to show colors underneath. Since the Kuna are inspired by everything around them, most of the traditional patterns come from observing nature. The Molas we created were inspired by the Flora and Fauna native to the American continents. See if you can tell which plant or animal each student has selected.
