The tanner crab’s scientific name is Chionoecetes bairdi. It has eight legs, its color is a light purple, and it has two pincers. It can live up to 14 years. It lives on soft bottoms of sand and mud in the Bering Sea and in the waters off Kodiak Island. It lives in water of 6 to 474 feet. The tanner crab is very much like the snow crab. It eats worms, clams, mussels, snails, other crabs, and fish parts. The male crab can measure up to 5.4 inches, and the females can measure up to 3.5 inches. It can weight up to 2-4 pounds.
