The Spotted Seals scientific name is Phoca largha. It is brownish-yellow, gray-white, or gray-blue with spots or faint rings. It is a mammal that at maturity weighs 180-240 lbs. It is 56-67 inches long, but at birth they average 33 inches long and weigh 18-26 lbs. Newborns are called pups and have a dense coat of white fur that they shed 4-5 weeks after birth. The spotted seals diet includes a huge variety of marine life. They eat schooling fish, Arctic cod, sand lance, sculpins, flatfish, and cephalopods like octopus. They also eat different types of shrimp, herring, capelin, saffron cod and smelt. Pups eat mainly crustaceans, or small shrimp. |
