Common Name: King Salmon / Chinook Salmon
 Scientific Name: Oncorhynchus shawytscha
 Report and Illustration By: Rachel

Chinook salmon live most of their lives in the ocean. However, they spawn in
freshwater. The female salmon lays her eggs in the gravel in the bottom of a river, a lake, or stream. The male then covers them with sperm. The adults soon die. About 150 days later the babies emerge from their underground nests. At this stage in life they are called alevin. They then grow to be juveniles. Next they turn into smolts. At this point in their lives most move or migrate to the ocean. There they live to be adults (if not killed first). When they are old enough they migrate back to where they themselves were born to spawn. Then, just like their parents before them, they die. Then the life cycle starts all over again.

Chinook salmon are carnivores (flesh-eaters) they eat fish (like herring and pilchard),
squid, and crustaceans (like shrimp).
