ALISON Introduction

Students from ACSA are participating in a project entitled ALISON, the Alaska Lake Ice and Snow Observatory Network. The project is headed by Dr. Martin Jeffries, Research Professor of Geophysics, at the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks. It is designed to include teachers and students from around the state in a research project studying lake ice, snow and
conductive heat flow in the State of Alaska. ACSA is one of a handful of Alaskan schools
included in the project. Over the course of the past three winters, students have been
collecting data on snow depths, temperature readings, and ice thickness.
For more information about the project, check out the ALISON web site.

The set-up crew of 2005-2006

Holes were cut into the ice to place the
stakes along the 100 meter long transect .

Donald packs snow and slush
in, to secure the stake.

Fractures & bubbles in the ice

Graduate student Marc Gould saws a
line in the ice to install the TWIT,
or thermal wire ice thickness gauge.

More bubbles that have frozen into the ice
from decaying organic matter.

A new piece of equipment for this year.
A line of thermisters to collect air, ice, and
water temperatures 24 / 7 this winter.
