GUIDELINES FOR INTERVIEWING PEOPLE

Items to include when interviewing a person:

1. Ask the "W" questions:

WHO?
WHAT?
WHEN?
WHERE?
WHY?
HOW?

2. Many times your first question will begin your story for you.
3. Avoid questions that can be answered with only "yes" or "no".
4. Questions should draw out interesting information about your subject.
5. Be prepared to take notes. If you miss a statement, ask the person to repeat it. If your are going to quote the subject, be sure to record the speaker's words accurately.
