Ms. Booth Goes to Washington By: Mason During the summer, Taylor B. was voted to represent Alaska in the International Child Art Foundation (ICAF) contest held in Washington D.C. She said, "It was cool because, I got to meet new people who didnt speak much English, so it was interesting. Taylor hopped on the jet on September 5th to join 30 other states and 63 countries to the ICAF festival. The festival was held in the National Mall. Each artist had to make a mural about peace and love, or what animal they would want to be and use one word to describe it. There were about 100 murals created in all. Taylor created the peace and love mural, also the animal, she wanted to be. She wanted to be a turtle, because in Hawaii, they say that turtles are lucky. She told us what her favorite mural was the first one she painted, because It describes my home town, and it had the flowers Jimmy showed us how to make. She exclaimed that they had to make murals to occupy them selves or to entertain themselves. While she wasnt drawing, Taylor got to shop and visit some sites: she visited the Vietnam Wall, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Seabees Statue. After her exploring, and drawing, Taylor hopped back on the jet and headed home. I think Taylor had a lot of fun in our Countrys Capital. |

Student Council Representative Elections By: Katie and Charlotte Anvil City Science Academy recently held its student council representative elections. The elections were held on October 8, 2003 during group project. The students voted by circling the persons name that they wanted to win. The duties of a student council representative is to go to the meetings and help make decisions. It is their job to listen to the ideas of their classmates and present them at the meetings. It is their job to listen to the ideas of their classmates and present them at the meetings. The representatives also must participate in student council fund raisers and activities. The candidates for fifth grade were Anna, Sara , Katie , and Mark. However, there was only one person running each for 6th and 8th grade representative, Taylor R. and Brett. Taylor B., Rachel, and Darell battled it out for 7th grade representative. The ballots were counted by student council President Katie and Vice-president Mason. Mark and Taylor R. will represent the fifth and sixth grade. Taylor B. and Brett will be the representatives for the seventh and eight graders. Being on student council is a big responsibility. It feels food to be on student council because you get to make decisions, says Brett, 8th grade representative. The representatives will help the student council make good decisions for the school and help put on fund raisers. Student council is a good experience for everyone. |

Terminator IV: The California Elections! By: Brett and Jonny What is up with Schwarzenagger running for California Governor. Its so crazy it just might work look at Jesse Ventura. Republican Arnold Schwarzenagger did win his election and he is now Governor of California. What a surprise, so in this story well describe Arnold's race to Policies. In the first election Davis won. Only a while later 1.3 million Californians voted for a recall election in which, Arnold won by 500,000 votes! Also 55% of people in California said they were sick of Davis and needed something new. Most people believe Arnold will give California a new beginning. Arnold Schwarzenagger is the most highly paid actor in history, and the builder of a fitness empire, winner of six Mr. Universe awards. Lets go back a ways thought Arnold grew up in Austria, became a weight lifter and moved to America with only twenty Dollars! Arnold started running for governor when the California elections began. Arnold said that California needed another chance. He had some good ideas that he wanted to put into action. The people liked his ideas enough to vote for him. His ideas were convincing, and the people believed he could make a difference. The people of California are fed up with Davis and need someone with new ideas, and a brand new opening to politics. |

Under the Stars By: Adem and Stephen On the twenty-fifth of September through twenty-sixth of September the students of Anvil City Science Academy went on a camping trip to the Dexter Girl Scout Camp. They did it, simply for fun and a bit of education, traveling on 10+ year old buses donated by the West's. The students participated in a variety of classes. They learned about healthy eating styles, what is good for your health and what is bad for your health with Angie Gorn. The classes listened to a safety speech while we were out at the camp. Pat Hahn instructed the class. The students also learned about weather with Jerry Steiger. The students talked about tundra with Richard Beneville. They also went to this class that was about how we to track caribou, moose, and bears with radio collars. The students had to hide the collar then, go find it. They had fun. The next class was the animal tracking class, it was fun because, Stephen got to go hide the collar then the class had to go look for it. It took the whole class period to find it. It was stuck it up in a willow and was covered with leaves. The class would of never found it but Stephen snuck over there and grabbed it and stuck it in his pocket. The students with the receiver were all messed up because the collar kept changing directions because Stephen was walking around them in circles. It was funny that nobody knew what was happening. Then he took it out of his pocket and threw it away from the group then Mason found it. Then we went back to the cabin and class was already over. During free time the ACSA students did several things. Some played football, baseball, tag, and catch while others simply talked. Stephen, Nicholai, Jesse, and Banner thought football was the best part of the camping trip. The camping trip was a fun experience for most, if not all of the Anvil City Science Academy's students. On the whole students look forward for the next camping trip of the 2004-2005 school year. |

Let' Get Physical By Darell and Cord Every morning at 8:50, the students of ACSA go to the Nome Beltz Gymnasium to exercise in their P.E class. The students begin with a three lap run, stretches, and exercises like sit-ups, windmills, and pushups. Then they do an activity. The activities include running the mile, which is 22 laps around the gym floor, playing flag football, running relay races, and playing kickball, softball, or medic. The reason for the variety of activities according to the teacher, Mr. Hindman is to introduce kids to a lot of different games. Right now the class is in the middle of a unit on throwing and receiving. Eventually, that will lead into a unit on football In closing, the goals of P.E are to prevent childhood obesity and to promote childhood development in sports. |

New Students, New Classes, New Principal By: Mason and Taylor R. Jon F. Wehde was born and raised in South Dakota on a farm with his mom, dad, and his brother. Now he is the new principal at Nome Beltz High. He has a wife, and three children, all working or a student at the Nome Elementary. When hes not working, he loves to snowboard, likes to read science fiction and autobiographies. He also is a big fan of the Game Boy. Before Mr. Wehde was a teacher, he took night classes at college to earn his Masters Degree. Now Mr. Wehde has been teaching for 27 years. His principal job right now is to work with issues that involve new classes, to train teachers in new ways, and watch the curriculum of the classes. Mr. Looney takes care of the detention students and also knows how to do Mr. Wehdes job. And Mr. Wehde knows how to do Mr. Looneys job. So every once in a while, they switch jobs. Mr. Looney and I are like copilots, we both know how to land the plane. His plans as principal are to reduce
the drop our percent to zero, because Nome Beltz High School
is the best place for a student. He likes to see the bright
and shining faces of those students who come here to learn, and
those students with great common courtesy. Mr. Wehde chose
to be a principal, because of his shop teacher. He set me a really
great example. My shop teacher really inspired me to be
a principal. It took me a long time to decide if I wanted to
be a principal or a teacher. On the whole, Mr. Wehde is
now our new High School Principal |

Wrestling By: Colton West The 2003 wrestling season started this weekend with the Nome Nanooks hosting 11 teams for the Nome Invitational. These teams are Kotzebue, Unalakleet, St. Micheals, Stebbins, Dillingham, Gambell, Shaktoolik, Galena, Bethel, Savoonga and White Mountain. This weekend provided the community with 200 matches of non-stop excitement. This year the Varsity and Junior High, squad is coached by head coach Dudley Homelvig, assistant coach Wes Jones. With a strong returning squad, including three former ACSA students, Clinton West, Ramone Ponce and Benjamin Peterson plus promising newcomers, the NBHS Nanooks are looking forward to an eventful season. Training for this year officially began on September 22nd. An example of a normal two-hour practice is a quick 10-minute run; stretching various technical drills, live wrestling and defensive drills. You would think that would be the end of their day, but a wrestler is obligated to themselves and the team to keep their grades up and stay within weight regulations. During the weekend of October 25th , the Nanooks will be traveling to Valdez for another tournament. Be sure to keep an eye open for your favorite wrestler. This year Nome will be hosting Wrestling regionals on December 5-6. |

Varsity Volleyball By: Jesse, Nicholai, and Banner The Nome Beltz Varsity Volleyball team is a team that gives athletes the opportunity to learn how to play as a team and to have fun at the same time. The team has a total of eight players, a manager, and coach Keith Conger. Beltzs volleyball team hopes to set some high standards, and complete all of their goals. This year, Nomes team features Senior Co-Captain Darcee Perkins, Senior Co-captain Niaomi Brunette, Junior Co-Captain Sonja Head, Seniors Jenny and Katie OConner, Sophomores Christina Blandford and Chelsea Weiss, and Junior Nikita Shield. Brendon Tran is the teams manager. The coach of the volleyball team, Keith Conger said, The number one goal for our team, is to practice as hard as we can. He related this quote to his favorite quote from the coach of the Buffalo Bills during the time when they went to the Super Bowl for a number of years in a row. Each year they lost and the coachs comment on this was, Practice hard, play hard, and winning will come. He said that the volleyball teams record so far for this year is 10-4. He told us that his Mr. Conger has been coaching for 10 years, one year as an assistant coach and the rest as head coach. On the whole, this year looks good for the NBHS Nanook Varsity Volleyball team. Hopefully it will be. Nome has already been successful numerous times and we hope that they will win the rest of their games. |

Bulletin Boards By: Kellen and Daniel The first month of school kicked off with Group Project bulletin boards. Students of ACSA tirelessly poured over resources for three weeks straight to create 10 magnificent bulletin boards. We interviewed four of the best board groups to find out how the students got their ideas and how they did their boards. Rachel, the leader of the Basketball group told us how her group go their idea. We brainstormed a lot. We had weird ideas, good ones, [but] Jeremy and Jesse steered us toward Basketball. Rachel said she liked her idea because it was easy to research, [and] it is a widespread sport. Another good board was the Inventions board. I like my idea because it tells a lot of information, says Kelsey, a member of the Inventions group. Its interesting, too, she adds. The Inventions board has very cool paragraphs, probably the most interesting of any board. The most read one was most likely Underwear by Daniel. One of the most popular boards was the Paintball Board. The leader of this group Brett. Brett got his groups idea From playing paintball, he says. I like my idea because its fun, its a great sport, and its starting to catch on really fast, he concluded. I guess [bulletin boards] are okay, as long as you have a good group to work with, says Brett. Theme Parks was the highest graded group of all the bulletin boards. Their best part was probably their background; a roller coaster complete with the members of the group riding in the cars. Banner, leader of the Theme Parks group, tells us about their idea: Lauren Lauren gave it to me. (He sure did a lot of work) Banner also likes this idea because, Its an easy topic. Overall, the bulletin boards turned out to be great. Says Rachel, Youre not limited to one small space, you have the whole bulletin board to put up whatever you want, as long as it relates to your subject. |

DRAW!" By: Steffen and Jarvis Several weeks ago, the Fire Prevention Poster contest announced the winners at Anvil City Science Academy. Linda Gologergen, who works at Bering Straits Regional Housing Authority, announced the winners. The contest was put on, so kids would learn about fire safety around the world. The contest was about fire safety and home safety. It educated children to be fire safe and home safe. The contest was to promote fire safety and home safety to our Native American children and communities. Also, fire safety is good to know about, because it prevents children and people in our communities to be fire safe and home safe. The winners were Steffen and Lauren S. They said, the best thing about the contest was participating in the contest, because drawing and making the pictures was fun. Lauren said one of her hobbies is drawing. One of Steffens hobbies is drawing too. The Fire Prevention Poster contest is an annual contest. Well see if any ACSA students will win the next years contest. |

Lego Robotics By: Lucas Did you know Lego robotics started a few weeks ago? Im in it, its fun because you get to build robots with tracks or wheels. Mr.Hindman doesnt watch you do anything? The people in this club include Devin, Emerson, Daniel, Tucker, Johnny, Steffen, and Colton. The club takes place after school from 3:30 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The students have made several different types of robots. The club member can make tank like robots that can push staplers. They also made dragsters, which were pretty useless. One student built a shovel for their robot, but it didnt work that well. This club isnt all fun and games. You build robots for a chance to go to Anchorage to compete against other Lego builders. During the competition your robot has to perform special tasks. The A.C.S.A.s Lego builders may not go to the competition in Anchorage, but will compete against themselves here. Some of the tasks you must perform in the competitions include, having to move a ball across a plank. You also have to collect rings. Then you have to collect lego debris. Plus you have to do these without changing robot, and you must perform these tasks within a certain time. Well this is lego robotics for you. It sounds fun doesnt it? Have a good day and join Lego robotics. |

Ouch! Students Get a Shot in the Arm By: Taylor B. & AnnieKate Kids and teachers of Anvil City Science Academy, the Nome Belts Jr. High, and the High School lined up to get their TB shots on October 7th in the library. Each year since 1994 kids have been getting the shots. The reason why we get our TB shots each year is so that the micro bacteria that causes TB doesnt spread. So I bet your wondering what are in those TB shots. Well, the dosage chemicals are made out of Perfidies Protein Derisive (PPD). Nurses are trained to give the shots under the top layer of the skin, not to get deep down in the layers of skin, fat or muscle. After a couple of days, you get your TB shots read. In other words to see if your skin reacted, you the shot by getting bruising, redness, or a small bump. Some of the symptoms of getting TB is persistent coughing, fever, or night sweats. You may also catch the disease if you are living with a person infected with TB. If you get TB you have to take medicine for about 7-9 months, while you take your medicine for about the first month you cant be with other people. This year nobody in the ACSA got a positive result of TB, but you never know when you could get the illness called tuberculosis. You should get tested for TB each year and watch out for TB. |

Whoa Baby! By: Kelsey and Rachel The stork is getting ready for a major delivery. Mrs. Leeper and her husband, Chip Leeper, are expecting their first child on November 20th. Mrs. Leepers maternity leave starts November 12th and she will return February 6th, 2004. Mrs. Leeper plans to have her baby here in Nome, but if circumstances intervene, Anchorage will be close by. Ever wondered what it feels like to be pregnant? Mrs. Leeper says, I enjoy it because its fun having the baby move around in your tummy (just for those very deprived dads out there). Mrs. Leeper said that when I found out I was pregnant, I was really surprised and that her husband Chip was excited and wanted to double check. Mrs. Leeper revealed that her and her husband have baby names picked out for a boy and girl, but do not want to share those names with the public. Mrs. Leeper did hint though that if the Cubs had won the World Series, Chip wanted to name their baby after the pitcher on the Cubs, Kerry Wood. All in all, Mrs. Leeper is excited to bring a new life into the world and to expand her family. |

Take a Hike! By: Emerson Anvil City Science Academy students had a hike up Anvil Mountain on the 12th of September. Anvil City Science Academy does the hike yearly for their class photo. Jeremy was first up to the rock, I was second, and Mark was third. As Mark and I were walking up the shale-like part of the mountain, Jeremy tried to tell us something, but when we got off the shale-like part we saw Jeremy on the last stretch of the mountain. Then, we saw a fox sitting about 20 feet away. It turned out Jeremy was trying to tell us about the fox. I hope the fox will be there every time the school has the hike. |
