Message from the Superintendent

The Nome Public School District provides a full array of educational opportunities for students from kindergarten through grade twelve. A combination of dedicated staff and extensive use of technology opens the door for quality learning to take place. The district is committed to continuous improvement through curriculum alignment, staff development, and appropriate use of a district-wide assessment program. Our school board has given our district the guidance necessary to carry out its mission and vision.

Our students have been tested in a statewide system since 2000. In looking at our test results, we can see that grade levels are maintaining or making progress on state tests. When tracking students over time, more students are scoring proficient on the tests and our student cohorts are showing growth over time. On the exam with high-risk consequences for students, the High School Graduation Qualifying Exam (HSGQE), our student performance has improved so much that a member of the State School Board asked what NPS had done to show such dramatic improvement.

In recent years we have been fortunate to have an increased enrollment. We have been able to support a number of new program offerings at both the elementary and secondary levels, including a new correspondence/homeschool program, JROTC and a pre-engineering program. This would not be possible if our staff, students and community had not shown extraordinary support, striving for improvement in all facets of education for our Nome students. In addition, our Nome Common Council and City Manager have supported us by granting our funding requests each year, as well as supporting our schools in three successful school bonds put before the public. These bonds are for renovations and upgrades to our schools in both infrastructure and technology.

We are continually striving for excellence, not leaving any opportunity to chance. At this time, I would like to welcome you to a place where children can learn in a caring and safe environment and our school’s Mission Statement truly comes alive: “Nome Public Schools will graduate world class individuals experienced in unique comprehensive school programs sensitive to individual needs thorough sound educational strategies and technology. In Nome Public Schools students interact in diverse cultural settings, resulting in the ability to make informed decisions, and value life-long learning. This will enable our students to make a positive contribution while adapting to an ever changing society.”
