History of Nome-Beltz Junior ROTC
Nome's first Junior ROTC Program was the 2003-2004 school year. In the previous school year, students raised over $104,000 in just five weeks. After raising the money, we were able to get this started from the support of the community. Reba Lean chaired the fundraising committee; other members that helped her were Ramon Ponce, Stan Lujan, and Janeen Sullivan. We were on a waiting list to begin our program, and thanks to Senator Ted Stevens and his staff members we were moved from 401st Position to the number one spot. Kotzebue High School, who was scheduled to start the same year as ours, did not have the same level of community support, and were unable to start their own JROTC. After a lot of hard work, our first day of ROTC started September 2, 2003, with 85 students and Maj. John G Grennon as our Senior Army Instructor. Just one year later our cadet enrollment has jumped to 97 students.
